Game Modes

Standard and Permadeath risk modes, Adventure vs Farming variation, spawn points, tutorials, and farm tasks.

By Definya Team

Definya has two layers of mode choice at character creation:

  1. Risk modeStandard or Permadeath (XP multiplier and death consequences).
  2. Playstyle variationAdventure Mode or Farming Mode (spawn, onboarding, and starter items).

These are independent. You pick both during creation. Standard vs Permadeath controls how punishing death is; Adventure vs Farming controls where you start and how the early game is framed.

Risk modes: Standard and Permadeath

These modes affect risk/reward, especially XP gain and death consequences.

Mode XP multipliers

  • Standard: 1.35x XP
  • Permadeath: 1.8x XP

Labels you may see during creation

Character creation may show Standard Mode and Permadeath Mode. Treat Standard Mode as the default risk/reward path.

Standard

  • XP multiplier: 1.35x
  • Tooltip summary: +35% XP Gain; inventory, skill, and equipment loss may be possible after a certain level

Permadeath

  • XP multiplier: 1.8x
  • Tooltip summary: +80% XP Gain; character is deleted on death

Adventure Mode vs Farming Mode

The creation UI includes a Select Variation: control with:

  • Adventure Mode — the default adventuring path.
  • Farming Mode — a farming-focused onboarding path.

This choice is permanent for that character. It does not change your class, faction, or risk mode. It changes spawn location, starter gear, first tutorial, level-up tutorial order, and which task scrolls you receive.

Where you spawn

VariationStarting mapNotes
Adventure ModeFaction starter area (isle_of_origins)May also use alternate spawn experiments on some accounts. Respawn returns to your character’s saved initial scene.
Farming Modefarm-landAlways starts on the dedicated farm map. Death respawn also returns to farm-land.

Adventure characters begin in the broader world and follow the usual exploration loop. Farming characters begin on farm plots, fishing spots, and nearby farming routes so you can plant, water, and harvest immediately.

Starter items

Both variations receive the same class-based training weapons and baseline starter inventory. The main differences are farming tools and scroll type:

Adventure Mode starter pouch:

  • 5 Daily Task Scrolls — add extra general daily tasks when used.

Farming Mode starter inventory and pouch:

  • 10 Carrot Seeds
  • 1 Watering Can
  • 5 Farm Task Scrolls — add extra farming collect tasks when used.

Adventure characters may also receive bonus starter items from server-side onboarding experiments. Farming characters skip those experiments and keep the fixed farming starter kit above.

Tutorials

Definya uses two tutorial layers: short contextual hints (first time you plant, water, or buy seeds) and multi-slide advanced tutorials that unlock as you level.

On first login

  • Farming Mode — opens the Farming advanced tutorial immediately (planting, watering, harvesting).
  • Adventure Mode — no advanced tutorial fires on creation; follow quests, UI hints, and level-up unlocks instead.

On level up (levels 2–12)

Both variations receive advanced tutorials as you level, but the sequence differs:

Farming Mode front-loads crop care at creation instead of waiting until level 5. Adventure Mode spreads gathering topics across early levels in the usual combat-first order.

Tutorials are educational only — they do not grant XP, gold, or items on completion. Each lesson shows once per character unless replay support is added later.

Farm tasks and task scrolls

Both variations use the same daily task system: three personalized tasks per day, midnight UTC reset, and optional challenge tasks with higher payouts. See Quests and Daily Tasks for the full loop.

The scroll type in your starter pouch matches your variation:

ScrollUsed byEffect
Daily Task ScrollAdventure charactersAdds one extra general daily task for the day
Farm Task ScrollFarming charactersAdds one extra farming collect task for the day

Farm Task Scrolls only pick objectives marked as farming tasks (typically crop harvests). If no suitable farming task is available, the scroll may fail to add one — open your daily task panel first after login, same as Daily Task Scrolls.

You can earn more Farm Task Scrolls by completing harvest-type daily tasks, from some challenge task rewards, and from the farm-area NPC trader. Completing farming tasks can feed more scrolls back into the loop.

Adventure characters use Daily Task Scrolls instead; see the scroll section in Quests and Daily Tasks.

When to pick each variation

Pick Adventure Mode if:

  • This is your first Definya character.
  • You want the standard world spawn and exploration path.
  • You care about combat, quests, and map discovery first.
  • You want Daily Task Scrolls and the default onboarding experiments.

Pick Farming Mode if:

  • You already know you want to focus on crops, food supply, alchemy inputs, or farming skill progression.
  • You prefer starting on farm-land with seeds and a watering can ready.
  • You want the Farming tutorial immediately and Farm Task Scrolls in your starter pouch.

You can still fight, quest, craft, and explore on a Farming character — the mode nudges onboarding, not a hard rules lock. Many players run one Adventure main and a Farming alt for supply chains.

Build planning tips

  • Pick Standard Mode if you want the current default experience.
  • Pick Permadeath only if you accept character deletion on death.
  • Pick Adventure Mode for your first character unless you are deliberately starting a farmer alt.
  • Pair Farming Mode with Farming and Plants and the Alchemy and farming video guide when you want a crop-first route.
