Character Slots and Restoration

How many characters you can create, what counts toward the limit, deletion rules, permadeath slots, and restoring archived characters.

By Definya Team

Overview

Each Definya account can hold multiple characters, but there is a slot limit. How deletion and permadeath work affects whether a slot is free for a new hero.

Separately, long-inactive characters on free accounts may be archived. Archived characters can be restored back to your roster if you return to the game.

Character slot limit

You can maintain up to 12 active characters per account.

The game counts characters that still exist on your account and are not soft-deleted permadeath losses. That means:

  • Standard and active Permadeath characters each use one slot.
  • A Permadeath character that died and was soft-deleted does not use a slot — you can roll a new permadeath character even if you already have 12 other living characters, as long as those 12 are not all active permadeath builds.

If creation fails with a maximum-limit message, delete or archive-clear a character you no longer need, or restore archived slots only after a successful restore flow (see below).

Character names must be unique. The game normalizes names (ignores spaces and letter case) when checking availability.

Creating and deleting characters

Creation

Character creation runs through Quick Create or Advanced flows described in Game Modes and Classes and Builds Overview. You choose faction, race, class, risk mode, and Adventure vs Farming variation before entering the world.

You cannot create a character while you are at the active slot cap.

Manual deletion

When you delete a character from the character select screen, that character is removed permanently along with its inventory, skills, and progress tied to that save.

Deletion is blocked if the character is listed for sale on the marketplace — delist first, then delete.

Manual deletion is not the same as permadeath death (see below) and not the same as inactivity archiving.

Permadeath and soft-deleted characters

Permadeath Mode characters are deleted on death. That death uses a soft delete flag so the lost character no longer appears in your list and stops counting toward the 12-slot cap.

Soft-deleted permadeath characters are not restored through the normal player restore action — treat permadeath loss as final for that build.

Standard Mode characters face item and progression penalties on death but remain playable. See Game Modes for XP multipliers and death consequences.

Inactivity archiving (free accounts)

Characters on free accounts that stay offline and have not been played for roughly 90 days may be moved into archive storage. This keeps inactive data without leaving every old hero on the live roster forever.

Premium accounts are excluded from automatic inactivity archiving.

Archived characters disappear from your normal character list until restored. Their data is kept in backup storage so progression can return after you come back.

Restoring archived characters

If you log in and characters are missing after a long break, use the game’s restore characters action from the character select or account flow (wording may vary by client version).

What restoration does:

  • Looks up archived characters tied to your account.
  • Brings each archived character back to the live roster with inventory, skills, and map state from the archive snapshot.
  • Returns false or shows no change if there is nothing eligible to restore.

Restoration is account-wide — it attempts to recover all archived characters registered for your user, not a single pick-from-list operation.

Tips:

  • Restore before creating replacement characters if you want the same names and progress back.
  • Make room in your schedule to log in at least once every few months on free accounts if you want to avoid archiving.
  • Premium status helps avoid archive removal for inactivity.
