Alchemy and Blacksmithing
How alchemy and blacksmithing differ, what each skill crafts, stations and tools, and how they connect to gathering and progression.
Overview
Blacksmithing and alchemy are the two main production skills for gear and magical goods. Every class can train both. They share the same Crafting Book flow as cooking, but they cover different item families and material chains.
Most blacksmithing and alchemy recipes are crafted through the Crafting Book. A few early loops also use Use with… on world stations (for example smelting ingots on an anvil).
Blacksmithing
Blacksmithing is the metalworking skill. It covers the largest recipe pool in the game — mostly weapons and armor, plus ingots, tools, and related components.
What blacksmithing makes
Typical outputs include:
- Weapons — swords, axes, maces, daggers, spears, and related melee gear.
- Armor — helmets, chest pieces, legs, boots, shields, and accessories with metal bases.
- Ingots and metal resources — smelted from ores at forges and anvils.
- Tools — pickaxes, hammers, and other metal implements that feed gathering loops.
Progression usually follows ore tier: copper and iron early, steel and mithril mid-game, then corruption, obsidium, and other late metals.
How to train blacksmithing
- Mine ores with a pickaxe (Mining, Fishing, and Lumberjacking).
- Smelt ingots — equip a Blacksmith’s Hammer, choose Use with…, and target an anvil with ore in inventory.
- Craft gear — open the Crafting Book, filter toward weapons or armor, and craft items that list Blacksmithing as the required skill.
Starter quests such as Iron Ingot Craftsmanship and class first-weapon quests push you through hammer, anvil, and Crafting Book steps.
Blacksmithing tips
- Keep spare ingots — failed crafts still consume materials (see Crafting and Gathering Overview — success rates).
- Match recipe tier to your combat goals; the Crafting Book Suggested tab weighs your class, skills, and equipped gear.
- Tier 5+ armor and weapons may need Social Crystals on top of metal costs.
Alchemy
Alchemy handles potions, magical gear, runes, teleports, and many accessory recipes. It is the main skill for sustain and utility crafting.
What alchemy makes
Typical outputs include:
- Potions — life, mana, antidote, buff, XP, and regen potions (see Consumables, Potions, and Buffs).
- Accessories — rings, amulets, necklaces, and boots with magical bases.
- Staffs and wands — caster weapons across many tiers.
- Runes and scrolls — capture runes, teleport scrolls, pet treats, and other magical consumables.
- Books and special items — spell books and niche progression items.
Alchemy recipes often pull from farming harvests, fishing shells, gems, and monster drops — not only ores.
How to train alchemy
- Stock herbs and crops from Farming and Plants or NPC shops.
- Open the Crafting Book and browse potion, accessory, or magic categories.
- Craft in batches when recipes allow multiple outputs — potions and runes are often more efficient per material than single weapon crafts.
Early quests such as Learn to heal introduce recovery items through NPC interaction rather than the Crafting Book alone.
Alchemy tips
- Higher Alchemy skill can improve potion duration and strength on some buff recipes.
- Life Bringer elves gain an alchemy training bonus through Factions and Races — useful for potion-heavy builds.
- Teleport and high-tier staff recipes jump in skill requirement quickly; use the Recipes database to plan mat runs before committing crystals or rare gems.
Blacksmithing vs alchemy
| Blacksmithing | Alchemy | |
|---|---|---|
| Primary outputs | Metal weapons, armor, ingots, tools | Potions, staffs, accessories, runes, teleports |
| Main inputs | Ores, ingots, leather, wood | Herbs, crops, fish, gems, essences |
| Typical stations | Anvil + hammer (use-with), Crafting Book | Crafting Book |
| Gathering partners | Mining, lumberjacking | Farming, fishing, hunting drops |
| Late-game gates | Heavy ingot costs, tier 5+ Social Crystals | Rare mats, high skill, some crystal costs |
Many endgame builds train both: blacksmithing for worn gear, alchemy for potions, runes, and caster weapons.
Crafting Book workflow
Both skills use the same player flow described in Crafting and Gathering Overview:
- Open Crafting Book.
- Pick Suggested, Pinned, or a category such as weapons, armor, potions, or accessories.
- Confirm ingredients, skill level, inventory space, and any Social Crystal cost.
- Choose quantity and craft.
Pin recipes you craft often so daily craft tasks and material farming stay aligned.
